Daily Hair Tips

6: Thou shalt worship thy nourishing products
Nourish, nourish, NOURISH! We just can’t stress it enough. Treat your tresses to a deep conditioning mask once a week – and throw the rule book out the window! Many masks will tell you to leave the product on for around 10-15 minutes, but a certain celebrity hair whisperer once told us that anything under 30 minutes is pointless. And once you’re fully coated in your conditioning mask, wrap your hair c
onditioning mask, wrap your hair tightly in cling-film to seal in the heat; this will activate the mask’s healing properties. Movie-star shine and a silky-smooth finish guaranteed; think dreamy, not dreary.

Daily Hair Tips

5. Thou shalt heat with caution
Blow-drying, styling, straightening – who knows where our style would be without our favourite tools? But much as we love them, the heat generated from these much-used appliances can penetrate the cuticle and leave hair dry, damaged and dull. Praise be to the heat-protection product! Invest in a good thermal-barrier mist and use it every time you style to keep those locks healthy and full of vigour.

Daily Hair Tips

4. Thou shalt protect hair from the sun
Obvious, yes – but no less vital. Harsh UV rays are just as harmful for our hair as our skin. What’s more, summertime nasties such as salt water and chlorine contribute to the degradation of hair follicles – meaning holidays can be particularly hazardous for hair. Invest in a moisturising spray with UV protection and keep it in your beach tote at all times.

Yesterdays Hair Tip

3. Thou shalt feed thy hair
Eat your hair beautiful! The healthier your diet the thicker, shinier and healthier your hair. As hair is made of protein, it makes sense to up your protein intake – think chicken, oily fish, pulses and nuts. And do drink lots of water also to banish dryness and promote natural sheen.

2. Thou shalt not steal moisture from thy hair
The key to a perfect shampoo and condition? Finish with a cool-to-cold rinse to help seal the hair cuticle and convey natural shine, and always towel dry hair before conditioning otherwise you could be diluting the conditioner by up to 70%.

Daily Hair Tips

1. Thou shalt cleanse, tone and moisturise.
That’s right, ladies, these rules don’t just apply to skin, you know.
Cleanse: Wash hair every 3 days - daily washing steals the natural oils from the hair cuticle and can leave your tresses weak, limp and difficult to work with.
Tone: Stick to the colouring rules - whatever works with your own colour and skin tone is key, so avoid going more than 3 shades either side of your natural hair colour. The most important thing is that colour works with the wearer.

Moisturise: Treat hair to a intensive conditioning treatment once a week – your mane will thank you for it.

Hairstyles 4 This Season

The spring/summer catwalks were awash with playful curls and one of our favorite looks of the season was on the runway at Sonia Rykiel. You can achieve this retro look by adding curls all over your head and then vigorously brushing them out. Fix with hairspray.
Floral headbands are a great way to enhance loose lengths and carefree waves. This style is especially perfect for al fresco weddings and spring/summer ceremonies.
A great way to wear curls with ‘edge’, simply tease your mane to one side and smooth with a high-gloss serum. Secure with a glitzy slide and really amp up the loose curls by adding a volumising mousse.
Perfect condition, dreamy loose curls and a centre parting that opens up the face and highlights the shape of the cut. If you want a hairstyle like this before a great day, treat your locks to regular conditioning masks during the countdown.
Take inspiration from this season’s most stylish catwalks and opt for a simple, yet effortlessly elegant pony. A pretty style seen at Calvin Klein uses subtle body and height at the crown, swept into a sleek ponytail at the nap of the neck. A few loose tendrils add to the dreamy, romantic finish.
If you have short hair it can be tough to know what to do with it, especially if you want a do with maximum impact. One word: retro! Think Flapper Girl chic - the 1920s wave can be stunning and works on all hair types and face shapes.
f you’re planning a perfect summer beach party then this sassy style is perfect for you. It's relaxed, easy and says: "oh, this? It’s nothing really!" Simply add texture with a sea-salt spray for that authentic beachy effect and tease into a tousled style with your fingers.

Reader make-over with Hilary Alexander: Anne-Marie Arpino

John Lewis competition winner Anne-Marie Arpino says she hasn't stopped smiling following her style make-over with Telegraph Fashion Director Hilary Alexander.

18 APRIL 2011

PART OF JOHN LEWIS HOT TOPICS

Anne-Marie was one of two lucky Telegraph readers to win a spring make-over with Hilary Alexander at John Lewis Oxford Street in London. The outfits were selected from over 400 fashion brands at John Lewis and Anne-Marie was also treated to a hair styling session with Warren Holmes of Nicky Clarke and make-up by Jaysam of Lancôme. Here, Anne-Marie shares her verdict on the make-over.

John Lewis has always been one of my favourite stores and I was delighted with some of the new womenswear ranges that they have introduced.

There was a huge choice of brands that catered for an assortment of styles and ages. Everything was really up-to-date, well laid out and, as always with John Lewis, the staff knew where everything was and were extremely helpful.

When it came to selecting the outfits, I let Hilary guide me because I really wanted to get out of my comfort zone of wearing nothing but jeans. I also wanted to look at colours that I wouldn't usually try. Some of the outfits were in bright orange and emerald greens, colours which have never graced my wardrobe in the past.

We selected dresses with some lovely cardigans and bolero-style jackets to match, some with gorgeous detailing. The evening dress was a stunning red halter neck with a divine full skirt which we all dubbed the 'Marilyn'!

Hilary was able to show me how some styles didn't suit my shape and also gave me some easy tips on accessorising outfits with different shoes, scarves and jewellery.

The only thing I was concerned about before the make-over was getting my hair done - I have very fine limp hair and have tried a number of styles over the years, but nothing has ever worked. But I needn't have worried. Warren, the Stylist from Nicky Clarke, spent some time looking at my hair and we decided to do some serious cutting and layering to give it some body and then he added lots of curls. The cut has really worked for me and in the days since the makeover it is still looking great and is easy for me to style in the morning.

The final stop for the day was getting my makeup done by Jaysam from Lancôme before posing for the photographs.

Before applying any of the makeup, Jaysam used some new Lancome products on my skin that gave me a blissful base. He also used an amazing new eye care product that included a concealer.

Jaysam gave me some great tips on applying foundation using a foundation brush and managed to get a very even, matte finish to my skin, giving it a healthy glow. He highlighted my eyes and gave them the wonderful 'smokey' appearance that we all see in magazines (using some very easy to apply lash extensions).

When I arrived home after the make-over my husband and children were all surprised and delighted at the change. They all thought that I looked younger and my husband especially liked my hair with all the curls. My boys kept patting my hair and telling me it looked pretty! The next morning when I dropped the boys at school I had lots of comments on how good my hair looked from all the other mums.

I have three young boys all at school and nursery so life is very active and I find I am always running from one place to another. Some of the outfits I chose are adaptable and can be dressed up or down depending on what I am going to be doing, so I can wear them to do some shopping and then, with a quick change of shoes and adding a scarf, they look great for the office.

Since having the make-over I have already been out for a meal wearing one of the outfits and it made me feel sensational.

The experience of having the makeover has made me more aware of how I look and I am going to be more adventurous in the future about trying styles and colours that I would have previously disregarded.

I am also going to spend time experimenting with my hair and makeup and investing in some new products for my face.
